Powell Named CCAA Coach of the Year

The Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is proud to announce Matthew Powell of the Seneca Sting as the 2026 CCAA Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year.

In just his second season leading the program, Powell orchestrated a remarkable turnaround for Seneca. After finishing the 2024–25 campaign with a 6–12 record, the Sting surged to a 15–1 regular-season record in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) during the 2025–26 season, finishing among the top teams in the conference's highly competitive East Division.

Powell's squad also found success outside of league play, compiling an impressive record in exhibition and tournament action. The Sting captured the Durham College tournament championship, highlighted by a 3–1 victory over Humber in the final after defeating Loyalist in the semifinal.

Under Powell's leadership, Seneca developed into one of the most disciplined and cohesive teams in the country. His impact extended far beyond the court, where he placed a strong emphasis on the holistic development of his student-athletes.

"Matthew has done an outstanding job in a short period of time transforming the Seneca men's volleyball program," said Todd Caughlin, CCAA National Volleyball Convenor. "His dedication to developing student-athletes both on and off the court has created a culture of excellence, accountability, and personal growth. The results this season speak volumes about his leadership, and Seneca is now a program that others aspire to compete against."

A strong advocate for academic achievement, Powell has helped elevate the program's classroom success as well. The team's academic standing rose from 88 per cent in 2024–25 to a perfect 100 per cent during the Fall 2025 semester, reflecting his commitment to supporting student-athletes in all aspects of their collegiate experience.

Powell's coaching philosophy focuses on leadership, accountability, and creating a supportive environment where athletes can grow. He remains actively engaged in his players' academic and personal well-being while fostering a team culture built on commitment and mutual support.

Prior to joining Seneca, Powell served as an assistant coach with both Humber Polytechnic and Mohawk College, gaining valuable experience within the OCAA. He has also coached at the club level with the Melville Steel City Attack and Brandon Volleyball Club, and holds his Advanced Development Coach certification.

His mentorship has also helped athletes advance to higher levels of the sport, including former player Logan Vorster, who represented the New Zealand Junior National Team and is now training with the country's senior national program.

As Seneca continues its pursuit of a national title, Powell's leadership has positioned the Sting as a formidable contender and a program on the rise.

The CCAA Men's Volleyball Coach of the Year award is presented annually to a coach who demonstrates exceptional leadership, success, and commitment to the development of student-athletes. CCAA Coach of the year winners receive a customized ring provided by Jostens Canada, the Official Ring Supplier of the CCAA National Championship banquet.
