Sting Fight For Position at OCAA Championships

Day one is in the books at the 2026 OCAA Badminton Championships, hosted by Seneca Polytechnic in King City, Ontario.

In women's singles, Humber's Rachel Chan remains the lone unbeaten in Pool A with a 3-0 record. Chan has dominated the action so far, having surrendered five or fewer points in each set so far. Fanshawe's Samantha Darby and Seneca's Tiffany Amper each sit at 2-1 with a Saturday morning showdown to wrap up the round robin. Seneca's Chincco Lai sits atop Pool B with a 3-0 record, but is being closely followed by Humber's Elena Meng and Fanshawe's Rejoice Nwokedi. Meng and Nwokedi will match up in their final round robin games to decide second place in the pool.

Defending Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) and OCAA champion Tim Lock of Humber has company atop Pool A in men's singles. Ram Ng of Fanshawe holds an identical 4-0 record as the two are on a collision course Saturday morning to decide who gets a bye into the semi-final. Fanshawe's Arpi Sinha is the lone unbeaten in Pool B. Maulik Jain of Seneca (3-1) and Conestoga's Thinh Nguyen (3-2) are trying to hold off Humber's Reanbert Valentino and Lambton's Milton Smith who each sit at 2-2 with the top three from each pool advancing.

Humber's women's doubles team of Sherry Wu and Shruti Joshi have punched their ticket to the playoffs, sitting at 4-0 through day one. Fanshawe's Tilu Vaidya and Nicole Kim share an identical record of 3-1 with Seneca's Amy Xing and Vanness Lam with Seneca having already defeated Fanshawe in three sets (21-19, 15-21, 21-19).

Seneca's Bosco Lai and Jordan Lau lead the men's doubles division with an unblemished 4-0 record. Humber and Fanshawe each sit one game back at 3-1 while Cambrian and Conestoga each sit at 2-2 with a change of reaching the playoffs.

Two teams finished day one with four wins in mixed doubles, but only the Humber Hawks remain undefeated. The Hawks team of Catherine Choi and Jack Ronahan defeated Seneca 21-14, 21-9 in the round robin. Fanshawe looks to match Seneca on day two, sitting at 3-1 with two matches to play while Cambrian remains at .500 heading into day two.

Day two action starts at 9 a.m. with the conclusion of the round robin. The quarterfinals (singles only), semi-finals and medal matches will all take place Saturday with the gold and silver medal winners qualifying for the CCAA National Championships.
