Butcher Named OCAA All-Star

SUDBURY, Ont. - Fanshawe College's Janelle Albert (Brampton) was named the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) Women's Volleyball Player of the Year in a ceremony held in Sudbury, Ont., on Friday morning as part of the 2019 OCAA Women's Volleyball Championship presented by belairdirect.

Albert was the leading scorer on a Fanshawe team that went undefeated in 18 regular season matches to win the West Division crown. The second-year outside hitter averaged 4.5 points per set with 230 points, 161 kills, 52 service aces and 17 blocks. Albert is also a Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) All-Canadian, as well as an OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star.

Breanne Scheerhoorn (Belleville) of Algonquin is also a CCAA All-Canadian. The fourth-year left side was the OCAA East Division Scoring Champion averaging 4.6 points per set. She contributed 228 points on 178 kills, 28 service aces and 22 blocks. Scheerhoorn is an OCAA East Division First-Team All-Star.

Fanshawe's Ashley Rafferty (Peace River, Alta.) is the OCAA Rookie of the Year. The setter facilitated the majority of Fanshawe kills during the regular season with 399 assists to her credit, third overall among all OCAA players. Also named the OCAA West Division Rookie of the Year, Rafferty headlines the OCAA West Division All-Rookie Team.

OCAA West Division Coach of the Year Jimmy El-Turk of St. Clair is the OCAA nominee for CCAA Coach of the Year. Coming off St. Clair's first OCAA medal in 21 years, the Saints finished in second place in the West Division with a record of 15-3. The most notable win came on Nov. 10 when St. Clair ended Humber's 155 game winning streak in OCAA regular and post-season play.

The West Division Scoring Champion was Te-Anna Stephenson (Whitby) of St. Clair. The second-year outside hitter averaged 4.8 points per set. She led all OCAA players with 297 points and 230 kills. Stephenson is also an OCAA West Division First-Team All-Star.

Algonquin's Tatiana Weissflog (Merrickville) is the East Division Rookie of the Year. The middle was eighth among OCAA players with 27 blocks. She also contributed 2.3 points per set, including 88 kills and 16 service aces. Weissflog headlines the OCAA East Division All-Rookie Team and is an East Division Second-Team All-Star.

Durham's Tony Clarke is the OCAA East Division Coach of the Year. His Lords went undefeated during the regular season, winning the division crown with a record of 18-0. The Lords lost only six sets the entire season, compared to 54 wins.

In addition to Albert and Stephenson, OCAA West Division First-Team All-Stars include Danielle Grasman (Komoka) and Meghan Morelli (London) of Fanshawe; Alex Bartman (Uxbridge) of Humber; Jessica Heidbuurt (Waterdown) of Mohawk; and Julie Ann Milling (Woodstock) of St. Clair.

Joining Scheerhoorn as OCAA East Division First-Team All-Stars are Kristine Ledger (Port Carling) and Ashlyn Kadlecik (London) of Canadore; Althea Boncheff (Alliston), Devyn Fraser (Uxbridge) and Jessica Joensen (Pickering) of Durham; and Jillian Hoftyzer (Stratford) of Loyalist.

The OCAA West Division Second-Team All-Stars include Isabelle Rivest (Sturgeon Falls) of Cambrian; Kyla Wilkins (Brampton) of Humber; Jordan Koslowski (Hamilton) of Niagara; Jasmyn Stoffers (Franford) of Redeemer; Jessica Masse (Cottam) of St. Clair; and Tamia Cooper-Evelyn (Brampton) and Katelyn Long (Timmins) of Sheridan.

In addition to Weissflog, OCAA East Division Second-Team include Rlyee Leger (Alexandria) of Algonquin; Jess Venhuizen (London) of Canadore; Cassidy Nicholson-Clarke (Ajax) and Georgi Williams (Whitby) of Durham; Tiana Samuel (Scarborough) of George Brown; and Taylor Butcher (Ajax) of Seneca.

Joining Rafferty on the OCAA West Division All-Rookie Team are Kaelyn Emslie (St. Catharines), Emily MacEachern (Thornhill) and Saylor Smith (Leamington) of Mohawk; Madelyn Berg (St. Catharines) of Niagara; and Stoffers of Redeemer.

Weissflog's teammates on the OCAA East Division All-Rookie Team are Tianna Head (North Bay) of Canadore; Pasha Ormerod (Terrace, B.C.) and Williams of Durham; Beatriz Vilches (Cuba) of George Brown; and Domenica De Francesco (Barrie) of Georgian.
